There is no poetry without memory. Recovery and Transgression: Memory in American Poetry is devoted to the ways in which poetic texts shape, and are shaped by, personal, collective, and cultural memory. It looks at the manifold and often transgressive techniques through which the past is recovered and repurposed in poetry. T.S. Dopo più di 150 anni di storia nazionale, il Risorgimento continua ad essere al centro di un appassionato dibattito. Come viene dunque rappresentato e qual è il suo ruolo nella cultura a noi contemporanea? I due tomi dedicati alla narrativa di argomento risorgimentale prodotta dal secondo dopoguerra al 2011 offrono una seppur parziale risposta a questa domanda. Sono il risultato di una ricerca che si basa sull’analisi semiotica dei sistemi di valori e dei ruoli dei personaggi di un ricco corpus letterario. Romanzi di autori quali Sciascia, Bianciardi, Camilleri, Tabucchi, Consolo, Tomasi di Lampedusa, Vittorini sono percorsi e analizzati come un grande macrotesto in cui, nonostante le notevoli differenze di genere e stile, si possono rintracciare valori e ruoli tematici ricorrenti. Dal punto di vista metodologico, lo studio in questione ha condotto all’elaborazione di un nuovo modello di analisi che si è rivelato uno strumento efficace e versatile nel trattamento di repertori vasti e vari di testi narrativi. Dal punto di vista letterario e culturale, la ricostruzione delle ideologie relative all’unità nazionale ha invece messo in luce un’identità nazionale complessa, una difficile identificazione rispetto alle istituzioni, un disagio e un problema di abitabilità del proprio Paese che pervade la cultura italiana contemporanea, e in particolare il ceto intellettuale.

To what extent can imaginative events be situated in time and history? From the medieval to the early modern period, this question is intriguingly explored in the expansive literary genre of romance. This collective study, edited by Jon Whitman, is the first systematic investigation of that formative process during more than four hundred years. While concentrating on changing configurations of romance itself, the volume examines a number of important related reference points, from epic to chronicle to critical theory. Recalling but qualifying conventional approaches to the three 'matters' of Rome, Britain, and France, the far-reaching inquiry engages major works in a variety of idioms, including Latin, French, English, German, Italian, and Spanish. With contributions from a range of internationally distinguished scholars, this unique volume offers a carefully coordinated framework for enriching not only the reading of romance, but also the understanding of changing attitudes toward the temporal process at large.
